Do dermatologists need to take a blood sample in order to give you acne medication?
megg asked:
i have an app with my dermatologist and i have some mild-medium acne and the topical cream i’ve been using isn’t working real well and she said i may try medication. WILL I HAVE TO HAVE BLOOD DRAWN FOR THAT MEDICATION??

Probably not -
if you go on accutane possibly but they will likely do an antibiotic and some stronger topical medicine.
Since you are female, and I’m assuming that the medicine in question is Accutane, then, yes, you will need monthly blood testing. She will be checking to make sure that you’re not pregnant, and that your liver isn’t being damaged, and that your blood fat levels aren’t being affected. On the other hand, if she is electing to put you on oral antibiotics, then, no, you will not need blood testing.
